Mac nursing graduates all pass national licensing exam
July 16, 2018
JACKSONVILLE – For the third consecutive year, all graduates of the 2018 MacMurray College Nursing Program passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) on their first attempt.
The College had 19 graduates take the exam, 18 in Illinois and one in Indiana. Once the exam is passed, each state board of nursing will do a background check prior to issuing a registration.
“The national average for passing the exam on the first try was 85 percent in 2017,” Karen Bade, interim chair and assistant professor of nursing, said. “This achievement is a direct reflection on our students and our faculty.”
The National Council of States Boards of Nursing developed the exam to set minimal qualifications and competencies for safe entry-level nurses. All graduates from any nursing program have to take and pass the NCLEX exam.
“A license issued by the state board of nursing provides assurance to the public that the nurse has met predetermined standards,” Bade said. “In other words, the exam is looking at the knowledge the students have learned in their nursing program and is testing their competence to care for patients at an entry level. It is a national standardized test.”
This is the third year in a row MacMurray College has had a 100 percent pass rate on the first time taking the exam – it was 94 percent four years ago. The nursing program’s accrediting board, The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, set a standard of an 80 percent pass rate.
“We are proud of our students and our program for the continued success in passing the NCLEX-RN on the first try,” Bade said. “Our curriculum is very rigorous and the standards are very high for our students.”
These 19 graduates are all employed and have started their careers. Bade said that the majority of Mac nursing students will further their education within two years.
