Dr. John Cox earned his bachelors of arts degree at Louisiana Polytechnic University and a Master of Social Work degree at Louisiana State before embarking on a career with the Air
Force that spanned more than two decades, during which he held leadership positions focused on social services. Early in that career he earned the degree of Doctor of Social Work from the University of Utah in 1980.
At Air Force facilities around the world, Dr. Cox held positions including Chief of Social Work Services, Director of an Alcoholism Rehabilitation Center, Chief of Behavioral Sciences, Director of Family Support Center, Chief of Human Resources Development, and finally Special Executive Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, where he provided executive staff direction and leadership to the
Defense Equal Opportunity Council Task Force on Discrimination and Sexual Harassment.
Among Dr. Cox’s many honors during his Air Force career was an Air Force Achievement Medal for outstanding service while directing volunteer support for victims of a disastrous hotel fire in the Philippines in 1984.
Dr. Cox arrived at MacMurray in 1995 as the new director of the Social Work program.
From then until his retirement in 2011, he provided dedicated leadership for Social Work at MacMurray. He served our country with dignity and respect, and brought those qualities to MacMurray, where a generation of students was inspired by his example.
In view of his outstanding and dedicated service to our nation and the College, MacMurray College is proud to confer the degree of Doctor of Social Science on John D. Cox.
