Nurses march at capital

April 6, 2014

MacMurray College senior nursing students headed to Springfield last week to participate in the 16th Annual Student Nurse Political Action Day.

The 18 students attended meetings in the morning and early afternoon, and then marched to the Illinois State Capitol with more than 1,200 students from across the state. Once there, they attempted to meet with their local representatives, who were in session, and when their representatives were unavailable, they left cards and notes and later sent emails on a topic of interest to them.

The MacMurray nurses learned how health policies evolve, what the Affordable Care Act does and how important several of the bills are to the nurses, including their support for a Senate bill that would permit nurses to practice in adjoining states with an Illinois license.

Sponsored by the Illinois chapter of the American Nurses Association, the Political Action Day on how to wield the political force of the 176,000 nurses in Illinois.
