Faculty member to join science video advisors
October 8, 2013
MacMurray Assistant Professor of Physics Joanne Budzien will join six other educators, film advisors and a TV and film producer as an academic advisor to the Kavli Foundation’s Science in Fiction Video Contest.
Open to middle school and high school students, the Kavli contest challenges students to take an example from TV, movies or games and compare the clip to current or emerging technologies; or they can determine what needs to be invented before the example can actually happen. Then the students make a short video clip about their research and state their case.
The video contest is being held in conjunction with the Third Science and Engineering Festival, the largest in the United States, which is going on this school year and culminates in April with the Festival’s Grand Finale Expo and the US News STEM Solutions Conference in Washington, DC.
Dr. Budzien has a bachelor’s in basic science, as well as a master’s and Ph.D. in materials engineering, all from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, N.M., where she also spent time as research professor.
