MacMurray tops Webster in SLIAC semifinal game
February 24, 2012
JACKSONVILLE - In front of a huge Highlander crowd full of MacMurray students and parents, the MacMurray College men’s basketball team topped Webster University 68-62 to advance to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conferences’ postseason championship game.
Even though the Highlanders shot 55.0% from the floor, due to 14 turnovers they were trailing at halftime, 37-26. Freshman Clayton Whitlock led the Highlanders with 12 points in the half, but the team only shot 37.5% from the three point line.
With their season on the line, the Highlanders came out fighting in the second half. The Gorloks took a game high 14 point lead with four minutes into the second half before the Highlanders made their comeback. A combination of blocks and steals from the solid MacMurray defense gave the team more possessions late in the game to tie the score and eventually take an eight point lead with 40 seconds remaining in the half. The Gorloks tried to foul to get the ball back but key free throw shooting from senior Clint Lee secured the Highlanders lead.
SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, Clayton Whitlock tallied 22 points in the contest to lead the Highlanders offense. Freshmen Dylan Burton and Dylan Guthrie recorded 11 point apiece. Whitlock and sophomore Brady Slagle totaled eight rebounds apiece for the Highlander defense.
With the win, MacMurray advances to the SLIAC tournament championship game. Since the SLIAC has moved to tournament play, this is the first time MacMurray has played in the championship game. The athletic department would like to thank all of the students and supports that came to St. Louis to cheer on their team. Thank you for your continued support of MacMurray College athletics.
MacMurray and Westminister will tipoff on Saturday, February 25th at 1:00pm at Webster University for the SLIAC tournament championship game. With a win, the team will advance to the NCAA tournament.
