Area student honored

December 10, 2012

Mendy Overly, of Jacksonville, IL, was named the student of the month for November at MacMurray College. She is a junior social work major.

Overly, pictured receiving her award from Dean of Student Affairs Martin Sabolo, has been the main student behind the development and maintenance of the community garden -- bringing in volunteers, assigning tasks and conducting grant research – a skill associated with a graduate level of social work. The garden, begun this summer on the south side of MacMurray Hall, at the corner of College Avenue and State Street, provides fresh food to people in need in the area.

“Mendy has demonstrated leadership and hard work in her social work classes and activities,” said Joe Squillace, assistant professor of Social Work and chair of the division of social and behavioral sciences, who nominated her. “She is very giving and caring. We are grateful to have her in the social work family and watch her develop into a competent professional.”

Overly is also active in organizations on campus. She is the chair of the Environmental Justice Council of the Social Work Club. She was recently featured in the Jacksonville Journal-Courier for embodying the Christmas spirit and teaching her children to give back.
