Nursing professor defends dissertation
July 11, 2013
Jill Parsons, assistant professor of nursing, successfully defended her dissertation earlier this month to complete the requirements for her Ph.D. in nursing from Saint Louis University.
For her doctoral work, she studied fear of falling, concentrating on issues and risks among elders in long-term care. Her dissertation, "Fear of Falling in Long-Term Care," argues that fall concerns by both the long-term care residents and staff caregivers are directly encompassed in any resident's care.
“Fear of falling (FOF) has emerged as a prevalent issue and risk to the health of older adults, however, less is known about FOF among long-term care elders,” explained Parsons. “The aim of the study was to explore fear of falling and fall concerns from the perspective of both long-term care residents and staff caregivers directly involved in the resident's care.”
Parsons received her bachelor’s in nursing from Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing in 1998 and her master’s from Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing in 2005, studying nursing.
