MacMurray College senior Georgia Suau, an accounting major from Peoria, Illinois, was honored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois at the 45th Annual Student Laureate Convocation at the Old State Capitol in Springfield on Nov. 16.

“I’m excited and honored,” Suau said. “The Old State Capital is beautiful and rich with history. It's crazy to me that I sat and received an award where Lincoln spent a significant part of his career.”

Each fall, an outstanding senior from each of the state’s four-year degree-granting colleges and universities and one student from the community colleges in Illinois is awarded the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award and thereby becomes a Student Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

In the spirit of Lincoln, Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.

Each student is presented with a certificate of merit signed by the governor, a Lincoln medallion and a $1,000 check.

“Being associated with Lincoln’s name is a huge honor. He was an incredible leader and he did a lot for the country,” Suau said. “I hope I can measure up to the leadership example that he set.”
