The MacMurray College Social Work Program has been unanimously selected by the Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library Board as the 2019 "Friend of the Jacksonville Public Library.” A formal announcement was made at the library on Oct. 22.

“We are grateful for this strong relationship between our institutions, and the opportunity for our practica students to serve the community and library patrons,” said Dr. Joe Squillace, associate professor and director of the Social Work Program.

The relationship between MacMurray College and the Jacksonville Public Library started with strategic planning in the fall of 2017. Students began to be formally placed at the library in the Spring 2018 semester and since then, five students have served patrons of the public library. The role of the social work students includes assisting patrons with employment or public benefit searches, providing peer support and organizing community-based workshops for the library. They are provided supervision by the MacMurray Social Work Director of Field Education.
