MacMurray mourns the passing of Professor Katherine Starks-Lawrence

MacMurray College President Mark Tierno made the sad announcement this morning that Katherine Starks-Lawrence, assistant professor of marketing and business, passed away on December 24, 2016. She was 60.
Katherine valued education and thoroughly loved teaching students. Her husband, Larry Lawrence, said she truly enjoyed teaching at MacMurray. “When she came home she couldn’t wait to tell us about her students and how her classes were going.”
As a lifelong resident of Springfield, Katherine played an active role in the community. She has held many board positions within the area including president of the Board of Trustees at Lincoln Library in Springfield, served on the Reader Advisory Board of the State Journal-Register, the Campus Alumni Advisory Board at the University of Illinois Springfield, the Lincoln Land Community College Foundation Board, as well as president and founding board member of the LLCC Alumni Association.
Katherine is survived by her husband Larry, daughter Nicole; mother and father Charles and Betty Starks; brother Charles Starks Jr. (Claudia) of Atlanta, Ga.; cousins Charles Day, Monica Turner, and a host of nieces, nephews, special cousins, and friends. Katherine was preceded in death by her sister Wanda Louise Alvis.
Her husband thanked the staff and students at MacMurray for making Katherine’s last months on earth a blessing.
