MacMurray College invites applications for the position of full-time non-tenure-track Instructor or Assistant Professor of Physics and Mathematics appointment to start August 2019. Under the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS), the faculty member will support the Mission of the Natural Sciences and General Education programs by preparing graduates to become successful professionals. Educational areas include, but are not limited to, General Physics, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Trigonometry and Calculus.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaching and Advising
- Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes, using each course’s standard course outline as a guide.
- Develop course curriculum, course handouts, lectures, labs, and presentations.
- Participate in program level learning assessment. Participation includes helping articulate learning outcomes, choosing and administering measures, evaluating student performance, and suggesting changes to improve student learning.
- Work with other faculty and administrators in revising and developing program curriculum, standards, and policies, including new course development and reviewing and participating in textbook selection process where appropriate.
- Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in clinical, internship, observation, field experience, and similar settings as appropriate for the course or program.
- Assign grades and maintain course/student records in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit grades and records by established deadlines.
- Meet all classes and other scheduled responsibilities such as office hours and meetings at the designated times.
- Through the advising process, help students identify and progress toward their educational goals, as well as providing incidental academic advice to students in classes, especially during designated periods of pre-registration and registration.
- Service to the College and Community
- Post and keep on-campus office hours to facilitate interaction with students, other faculty, staff, administrators, and the public.
- Serve on standing and ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, or as a student organization advisor.
- Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the discipline.
- Mandatory attend at college events include Fall and Spring Faculty Workshops, Opening Convocation, Honors Convocation, Commencement, and other convocations when academic regalia is worn.
- Engage in campus life activities including sporting events, homecoming, new student orientation events, and other campus activities.
- Fulfilling assessment responsibilities of programs, divisions, and the College.
- Assist the Admissions Office in the recruitment of students for the division.
- Contribute to institutional administrative projects including: HLC related work, Strategic Planning, Accreditation and programmatic self-studies, Institutional Advancement – e.g. alumni activities, grant writing, etc.
- Scholarship and Professional Engagement
- Maintain involvement in professional reading and other professional activities
- Attend workshops, conferences, and professional seminars to remain current in academic or program discipline, including: maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
- Serve in professional associations.
- Develop and improve teaching pedagogy to support learning including; webinar, teaching conference, and training seminar/workshop attendance.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. The College will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Physics or a related field such as Engineering from an accredited university/college; Ph.D. or terminal degree preferred.
- Minimum of two or more years teaching experience at the collegiate level.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and interest in student engagement
- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach course work.
- Clear commitment to working in an undergraduate liberal arts environment
- Ability to work as a member of an energetic academic team.
