Peter Cartwright (1785-1872) — one of the College's founders and the first president of the board of trustees — achieved legendary status in pioneer Illinois and beyond because of his talent as an impassioned preacher, speaker, and activist. Cartwright dedicated himself to religion, politics, and education. In the 1860s, Peter Cartwright insured the survival of the College through his generous support.
