The MacMurray College women’s basketball team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for a contest against conference competitor Spalding University on Monday, February, 4th. The Highlanders took the close contest from the Golden Eagles, 51-50.
The Highlanders overcame an eight point deficit near the end of the first half with a couple of three pointers by seniors Rachel Yeast and Amy Radford. Mac closed the gap at half and trailed just 23-20.
Accurate free throw shooting early in the second half helped tie the game up a 30-30 with 14:55 left in the contest. A back and forth battle, the game was tied four more times during the remainder of the half. With 24 seconds remaining in the half senior Kelsey Anderson made a three pointer with help from junior Sierra Sherrod. The Golden Eagles were fouled late but did not execute on their attempted free throws.
Seniors Amy Radford and Whittney Wade ended the game with double digits in scoring with 12 and 14 points respectively. Amy Radford also led the team in rebounding with 15 points.
With the win, the Highlanders improve to 5-7 in conference play with room to move up in the SLIAC standings with four conference games remaining. The team will travel to Principia College on Saturday, February 9th.
