The MacMurray College football team improves to 2-7 on the year as they defeated Eureka College on the road, 29-14.
The Highlanders got on the board late in the first quarter when senior wide receiver Deshonta Smallwood caught an eight yard pass from sophomore quarterback Cody Hussey, putting the Highlanders on top 7-0. The Highlanders expanded their lead to 10-0 at the half when junior Taylor Hosta kicked a 19 yard field goal.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Highlanders widened the gap in the fourth quarter. Touchdown passes to freshman Zach Mudd and Deshonta Smallwood put pressure on the Red Devils to attempt to make a comeback.
Hussey added an additional touchdown in the last two minutes of the game when he ran 44 yards into the end zone. This put Eureka College away as the Red Devils were unable to spark any offense late.
MacMurray tallied 539 total offensive yards in the contest while Eureka posted 339 total offensive yards. Deshonta Smallwood led the team in receiving yards with 104, scoring two touchdowns. Junior Tim Calvin led the defense with 5.5 tackles in the game.
The Highlanders will try to grab one more win in the 2012 season, hoping to improve upon their record from last season, when they play Westminster next weekend at CBC High School in St. Louis, MO.
