Football honored by Toys for Tots

April 8, 2014

The MacMurray College football team was surprised when two members of the local U.S. Marine Corps Reserve appeared at their spring practice session last week.

And they were more surprised when the two former Marines awarded the Highlanders with the Commander Award for their service during the annual Christmas drive. In December, MacMurray football team volunteered for the local Toys for Tots program, sorting presents for most of a day.

Presenting the award on April 1 were John Waltrip (pictured left) and Bob Komnick, of the Marine Reserves. “Without your help, Toys for Tots would have not occurred this winter season,” Waltrip said during the award presentation.

Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. This year’s local Toys for Tots effort, led by the West Central Illinois Leathernecks Marine Corps League Detachment #1177, was its 33rd consecutive year, with all proceeds going to benefit local children ages 2 to 16.
