November 5, 2011
The MacMurray College Highlanders earned their first victory of the 2011 season on Saturday, November 5th, topping Eureka College 40-21 on their senior day at home.
The contest got off to a slow start as each team was scoreless in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter Highlander senior Brian Clay ran the ball in the end zone to put MacMurray on top 6-0. The team attempted the two point conversion but it was no good. MacMurray dominated on offense during the first half, scoring two more touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Cody Hussey threw a nine yard pass to freshman Jorian Clemmons to give the Highlanders their second touchdown of the game. Later on in the quarter, junior Deshonta Smallwood caught a ten yard pass from Hussey in the endzone, giving the Highlanders a 18-8 lead at the half.
Eureka attempted a comeback scoring seven points in the third quarter while holding the Highlanders scoreless. However, a late surge of offense from Mac in the fourth quarter, widened the gap stopping Eureka’s efforts at a comeback. MacMurray tallied 22 points in the fourth quarter. Sophomores Damon Byrd and Da’Marcus Austin each scored a touchdown on completed passes from quarterback Hussey.
Cody Hussey ended the contest completing 18 of 33 passes for 381 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 sacks. Da’Marcus Austin led the team with 155 total yards, and senior Brian Clay rushed for 43 yards and one touchdown.
The Highlanders snapped its losing streak against a quality Eureka team that had four wins on the season. Congratulations to head coach Chris Douglas on his first win of his coaching career at MacMurray.
The Highlanders wrap up their season on Saturday when they travel to Crown College in Minneapolis for a 1:00 pm game.
