Al Lewis '84

I came to MacMurray with the intention of going pre-law. I had inadvertently checked a box on my SAT that said I was interested in being a journalism major. Dr. Allen Metcalf was my advisor and really shaped who I became as a writer. I truly owe my start to him. He provided me with an environment to be creative and learn at my own pace. MacMurray was a place where a lot of ideas were tolerated and that has influenced my writing style, even today.

Al Lewis graduated with a bachelor of science degree in journalism and political science at MacMurray in 1984. While at MacMurray, Lewis was a member of Alpha Phi Omega and wrote for the campus newspaper, The Daily Other. He obtained his master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Lewis has worked either as a financial writer or editor since 1985. Lewis worked in Amarillo, Texas before making a move to Colorado, working as a business reporter at the Rocky Mountain News and a business editor at The Gazette in Colorado Springs. In 2001 he made the leap to the Denver Post, where he was a business editor for three years before he became a weekly business columnist from 2003-2008. His column was also distributed by the New York Times and MediaNews Group news services. He discussed his column on Denver's 9 News, KUSA-TV on Sunday mornings and also writes a blog called Talk Back To Al. According to the Denver Post, Lewis detailed the follies of big business and conventional thought regarding the market and the economy: "He ... presents a humorous or counter-intuitive point-of-view and strives to capture the human drama as it unfolds in the business arena." Lewis resigned from the Denver Post on June 30, 2008 to take a job as a national business columnist, a job created for him by Dow Jones Newswires. The Denver Post's Business Editor Steve McMillan described Lewis as "the best in the country at what he does." He can be seen one to two times a week on Fox Business News and NBC's MyNews discussing recent business topics affecting Americans' everyday lives.

He has won several professional awards, including honors from the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Colorado Press Association. He was awarded with "Best Business Column at a Large Newspaper" in both 2006 and 2007, a national award given by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. He also won the 2000 Morton Margolin Prize for Distinguished Business Reporting from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver.

Lewis currently resides in Denver, Colorado with his wife, Susan, a native New Yorker. He says "there is always the possibility we may make the move to New York, but for now, I'm still in Denver, writing for Dow Jones from home."
