Distinguished Career Award 2013

Jo Ann Du Bois Nelson '73

Jo Ann Du Bois Nelson, a 1973 cum laude graduate of MacMurray College who majored in German and received her secondary education certification, your alma mater and fellow alumni are pleased to recognize and honor you as a 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Career Award.

While pursuing your degree at MacMurray, you were already hinting at a distinguished career of involvement, as you were a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Belles Lettres, and Mortar Board. You held several part-time employment positions, serving at McClelland Dining Hall and as the foreign language department secretary and language laboratory assistance, while maintaining an impressive academic record. You also received the Viola Blackburn Fearon Award for Modern Languages here at MacMurray before continuing your graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield, receiving your masters of education in administration.

Currently, you are employed at Trinity Episcopal Church as secretary, a position you have held since 2011. Prior to that, for thirty-four years, you were a full-time teacher of German and English at Jacksonville High School District 117. During this extensive teaching career, you have been prolifically involved in the community and the lives of your students. This impressive list includes but is not limited to being the director of student activities from 1998-2008; being a sponsor and advisor of both the National Honor Society and National German Honor Society; involvement in the German Club; and for the Classes of 1996 and 2003, you were the Rotary Interact and prom advisor.

However, your distinguished involvement and accomplishments do not stop there. While being an American Legion Auxiliary Life Member, you were also an American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State instructor from 1978-1984. You have been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International and have served as Alpha Phi Chapter president from 1992-1994, while previously chairing many committees and, presently, attending as scholarship chairman. Since then, you have been involved in the German American Partnership Program as coordinator and advisor for Jacksonville High School. This is a position you have held for nearly 20 years. Since 2003, you have been a member of the Art Association of Jacksonville and chair of the Beaux Arts Ball. Your present involvement is inexhaustible. You still hold memberships to the American Association of Teachers of German, Illinois Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association, and the Illinois Education Association. In addition, you are currently a member of the Jacksonville Education Association, holding offices as treasurer, building representative, and chair of professional rights and responsibilities committee. You have been the scholarship chair of Passavant Area Hospital Auxiliary Board of Directors since 2011. You are also presently cultivating even greater relations with the community and surrounding area as president of the Trinity Episcopal Church Women, superintendent, and church school teacher. In addition to these impressive accomplishments, you are also involved in the Wednesday Class member and St. Louis Art Museum.

In the last ten years, you have been honored with the Bill Russell Award for Excellence in Education; 2007 Jacksonville High School Teacher of the Year Award; and, that same year, Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. It is our due honor to endow you with yet another prestigious recognition of your professional achievements. Through the way you have lived your life and your continued involvement in the community, you have brought honor on your alma mater. It is with great pride that the Alumni Association of MacMurray College acknowledges you as a recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Career Award and presents to you this plaque at MacMurray’s Homecoming, October 19, 2013, in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Presented by the MacMurray Alumni Association Board.
