Parent Support Group

The MacMurray Parent Support Group promotes enhancing the quality of life for students, parents, and children by providing a safe and supportive space to deal with the challenges of parenthood. Formed by the Department of Social Work and the support of the MacMurray community, the group believes that retention can be enhanced as well as the life skills of individual members that will collaborate together to solve mutual problems and needs related to parenthood and college life.

Group meetings are held with a Social Work Professor, in which students, staff, and professors contribute to an ongoing dialogue discussing issues and concerns as they learn effective strategies for coping. Group guidelines such as confidentiality and a positive, nonjudgmental atmosphere are applied at all meetings. By sharing life experiences with others in a helping and caring environment, each student can gain more knowledge and self-confidence to provide a better life for their children and themselves. Group meetings are open to any MacMurray College parenting student, staff, or faculty (male or female).

The following issues/concerns were selected by the student parents as being significant in their daily lives:

  • Child Care
  • Campus Resources
  • Community Resources
  • Finances
  • Employment
  • Family
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Housing
  • Motivation
  • Problem-Solving
  • Success in School
  • Stress Management
