Learning Center FAQ

What is an FAQ?
A Frequently Asked Question.

What are the Spring & Fall Semester hours?
Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

What help can I get from a Learning Center tutor?
Learning Center tutors can help with assignments in writing and public speaking and can help you improve your study skills.

Is there a dictionary here? Where is a pencil sharpener?
We have dictionaries on the carrel on the north side of the LC. The pencil sharpener is by the main door. Do you have a bible? Several are located by the dictionaries.

If I am tutored, will everyone think I am dumb?
Many students get help, some on a one-time "I don't get this chapter" basis, while others come every week. Some students come to help them pass, and others come to keep their A.

Do you have access to databases?
You can access the database through the library website. PLEASE read at least two paragraphs before you print your article to make sure it is what you need. Don't kill any more trees than you have to!

What does Mrs. Pahde do?
Mrs. Pahde can help you in all of the Learning Center areas. Her real love is grammar. (She diagrams sentences for fun!) She does the administrative work of the LC, and she teaches one English or Rhetoric class.

How often are Learning Center tutors available? Why are Subject-Area tutors available for fewer hours?
We try to have a Learning Center tutor available every hour that the Center is open. Subject-area tutors are there to supplement the help that is available from the instructor and any departmental tutors. Their services are provided as a convenience to you, a "one-stop shop" concept.

What is the most difficult problem other students have had?
Even the best help isn't as effective when you wait until the night or the hour before the test or due date. Come early!

Who can use the computers?
They are available for any Mac students. Professors can reserve the machines for a classtime project. We do ask that you read and follow the Computer Usage policy in the Maggie.

Which study skills can I review?
We can go over time management, stress reduction, and test anxiety. If you want someone to quiz you from your review sheet or flash cards, we would be glad to do that. Subject-area tutors can help you with these skills as they apply to the subject.

How will my professor know I have come in for help?
If you are tutored, a sheet will be completed. An e-mail is sent to each professor whose students have come.

Who can help me with my Rhetoric or IOCC assignments?
Learning Center tutors can assist you.

May I study quietly or meet my friends here for a study group?
Yes! Please review in quiet voices, though, so that those who need quiet can have it. And remind us if you are studying and we get too loud.

How can I be a tutor?
You have to model good study habits by earning a 3.0 or higher GPA. You have to have the reccommendation of your departments and you need to speak with Mrs. Pahde. Her office is in the Learning Center.
