Biographical Note

Following the resignation of President Louis Norris, the trustees chose Dr. Gordon Michalson, a professor at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois as the tenth president. Michalson, an ordained Methodist minister, who pastored for almost twenty years in New Jersey before ascending as a college president, spect three years in the US Naval Air Corp during World War II, using skills he learned as a barnstorming pilot. He earned his doctorate in systematic theology and philosophy of religion from Drew Theological Seminary (Drew University).

Michalson was born in 1911 in Waverly, Minnesota and completed his undergraduate and graduate at the University of Minnesota. He married Louise Card in 1939; they were the parents of a son and a daughter. Before taking the professor position at Garrett, Michalson engaged in post-doctoral study at he University of Edinburgh.

Following a two-year sutdy under his leadership, Michalson instituted a curriculum change entitled "MacMurray Plan," which emphasized the humanities and which eliminated 258 courses considered too specialized for a liberal arts education. Because of the expanding enrollment in the 1960s, Michalson oversaw an expansion on campus with the addition of a fourth dorm for men, a campus center and chemistry building.

While at MacMurray, he was vice-president of Association of Colleges of Illinois, was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference held in Oslo in 1962 and London in 1966, received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Bradley University and was vice-president of the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities while logging 10,000 miles per year piloting his own plane. Michalson resigned in 1968 to assume the presidency of the School of Theology at Clarement College (California). He died in 1996.
