MacMurray student attends conference
Lamin Sanyang accepted into inaugural business internship program.
Sophomore business administration major Lamin Sanyang, of Jacksonville, IL, attended the Mary T. Washington Wylie Internship Preparation Program earlier this year in Chicago, IL.
The only one from MacMurray College and surrounding area to attend, Sanyang originally didn’t think of applying to the prestigious program. “With all the requirements, I didn’t think I could get in,” he explained. “Being from Africa, and not speaking English very well, I never pictured myself being able to I had a lot of help from [associate business professor] Emily Wright,” said Sanyang, a native of Gambia, West Africa. “She really encouraged me to apply for this conference and wrote me a great letter of recommendation.”
The program chose 25 students out of the total 60 who applied. While there, informational sessions were offered on the CPA examination, resume building and other vital information for soon-to-be college graduates. “The conference put me in contact with a lot of firms who interviewed us and gave us valuable information on finding a job in the future,” Sanyang explained.
Sanyang attributes his success to the education he is receiving at MacMurray College. “It makes me feel good about myself,” he explained. “I came here, barely able to write a sentence, and my professors put me in the position where I felt I could really make it. The support from my professors and from the CLE (Center for Learning Excellence) has been great – they are always open; I’ve learned so much from so many people. It feels like everyone at MacMurray is a tutor. I owe a lot to Professor Wright, She has been great to me. If I ever have a question, she makes time for me and helps me find an answer.”
The Internship Preparation Program is a three-day, all expenses paid program to honor the legacy of Mary T. Washington Wylie and seeks to develop future leaders in the CPA profession. Attending students learn critical skills for an internship and beyond; the opportunity to interview with accounting firms in the Chicagoland area; and share their new skills with students on their campuses.
