Social work sponsors an Advocacy Day
Students take a trip to Springfield.
JACKSONVILLE, IL – The Social Work Program, in honor of March as Social Work Month 2012, sponsored an Advocacy Day in Springfield, IL for students in the Social Policy class as a service learning experience. Advocacy Day took place Thursday, March 29, 2012.
During the trip, social work students learned about advocacy and lobbying while meeting with and observing different legislators at The Springfield Capitol. The itinerary for the day began with meeting Erin Laytham, a behavioral health policy analyst at Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities. Social work students later met with legislators including Jim Watson and Sam McCann.
Joe Squillace, director of the Social Work Program, and Emily Ralph, assistant professor of social work, took five students on the trip including Mendy Overly, of Jacksonville, Krissi Scott of Jerseyville, IL, Ashley Sanders of Jacksonville, Anna Ruppel of Jacksonville, and Katy Schmedeke of Morrisonville, IL.
