Long time professor receives emeritus status
Honor approved for recently retired Dr. John Cox.
JACKSONVILLE, IL – Dr. John Cox, longtime social work professor and chair of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at MacMurray College, has been awarded for emeritus status. He was honored in a unanimous vote by the MacMurray Board of Trustees.
The criteria for granting emeritus status are teaching excellence, service to the college and community and scholarship. Dr. Cox has exemplified these qualities while serving MacMurray College and the community for more than 15 years. He retired at the end of the spring 2011 semester.
Dr. Cox has been awarded the Dewey Wilkins Award for Teaching Excellence and the United Methodist Teaching Award, indicating his distinguished teaching record. He is involved in the Jacksonville area community through the First Presbyterian Church and various social service agencies. Dr. Cox has also presented scholarly work and attended various social work conferences throughout his time at MacMurray.
In his teaching career he has served on many different committees, such as a faculty representative to the Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Behavioral Sciences Department, working hard to maintain accreditation of the Social Work division. He brought recognition to MacMurray through his research involving the social work issues with veterans.
