Dedication ceremony to be held for Sgt. Tobin

October 10, 2011

JACKSONVILLE, IL – The late Sgt. Andrew Tobin will be honored during MacMurray’s Homecoming.

An oak tree will be planted in his honor at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, near Jane Hall, at the intersection of College Avenue and Clay Street. The public is welcome.

Participants of Sgt. Tobin’s tree dedication ceremony will be Katie Tobin, widow of Sgt. Tobin and a MacMurray alum; and Carol Christianson, Phi Nu advisor and lead agent for the tree memorial.

Other participants at the ceremony include Larry Trowbridge, who facilitated the event, along with local collaborator Pat Ward. MacMurray College President Colleen Hester and Chaplain Amy Kay Pavlovich will also be present.

Sgt. Tobin, 24, of Jacksonville, died Aug. 24 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit. He attended MacMurray in 2005 and 2006 before joining the military.

“MacMurray College is proud of the heroic service of Sgt. Andrew Tobin, and the memorial tree we will be dedicating provides a living legacy of MacMurray College’s pride in his service to the United States of America and our commitment to hold his memory in our hearts and our minds,” said President Hester.

Those wishing to contribute to Sgt. Tobin’s memorial may send a check payable to MacMurray College, noting that the gift is in support of the Sgt. Tobin memorial fund. Send checks to MacMurray College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 447 E. College Ave., Jacksonville IL 62650.
