Mac professor to help plan Chemistry Olympiad
Nadine Szczepanski joins committee for 2012 international competition.
Nadine Szczepanski, MacMurray College Shonle Professor of Chemistry, has joined the planning committee for the International Chemistry Olympiad scheduled for 2012 in Washington, D.C.
She joins researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Labs and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as well as educators from all around the country, including those from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the University of Michigan, Columbia University and many others.
Dr. Szczepanski has served as a mentor for the U.S. team, traveling to the competitions in Denmark in 2000, India in 2001, Germany in 2004 and Taiwan in 2005.
The annual Olympiad brings together high school students from 70 countries to compete in laboratory and theoretical examinations. This year’s Olympiad was held in Japan; the 2011 event is scheduled for Turkey.
The planning committee’s role is to prepare for many of the logistics of the competition, such as the opening and closing ceremonies, recreational activities, student chaperones and other staffing needs, plus numerous other duties.
