MacMurray alum named new women’s golf coach

August 25, 2010

Derek James embarks on his first year as head women’s golf coach at MacMurray College, as well as assuming the positions of assistant men and women’s basketball coach. A 2004 graduate of MacMurray, James brings successful achievements and professional experience to the Highlander crew.

"I am very excited about taking over the Women's golf program here at MacMurray and making it a nationally known program. We are going to build this team to produce quality student-athletes that excel on and off the field and represent MacMurray throughout the community,” said James. “The great thing about our program is that we will have a Division 1 type program at a Division 3 level. We will have use of two golf courses (Links of Jacksonville/Northridge Hills), two practice facilities, video equipment and more, and that excites me to be able to have use of these to develop good players into great players.”

A two-sport student-athlete at MacMurray, James received numerous conference honors including a two time all-conference selection in men’s golf. He was also the individual conference champion in 2003. Throughout his golf career at Mac, James was selected as the team’s MVP, team captain, and was a four-time tournament champion, as well as Jacksonville City Champion in 2004. He also received all-Midwest region honors.

James was also a three time all-conference selection in men’s basketball at Mac. He received most valuable player honors, was his team’s captain, and was listed in the top 10 all time for scoring, assists, steals, and points. James continues to hold the title as the all time career three-point leader at MacMurray. He also was a member of the only NCAA Tournament team at MacMurray.

“Derek served as the Interim Women’s Golf last spring and did a great job keeping the season on-track. He is a tremendously skilled golfer himself, and he is equally skilled in teaching the game. The MacMurray women’s golf program will benefit greatly from Derek’s leadership and dedication,” said MacMurray athletic director Dane Pavlovich.

In 2009, James was inducted in the MacMurray College Athletic Hall of Fame. Along with his Mac coaching responsibilities, he has also been the head golf professional at Northridge Hills during the past five years.
