College names provost

MacMurray College President Colleen Hester has announced that Dr. James R. Maxwell, who currently serves as vice president of Academic Affairs for the College, has been named to the newly-created post of provost. Dr. Maxwell has served as MacMurray’s chief academic officer since 2013 and came to the College with distinguished careers in both academia and business.
“Dr. Maxwell has proven himself to be a creative and skilled administrator, who has the respect of the faculty and all members of the MacMurray community,” said President Hester. “I am pleased to have a person of Jim’s character and ability lead our on-campus management team.”
Dr. Maxwell’s appointment was also enthusiastically endorsed by the Board of Trustees. “Jim’s energy and management expertise, combined with President Hester’s strategic and personal skills, give MacMurray a trusted and experienced team,” noted Board Chair Charles O’Connell. “The Board is confident that Provost Maxwell will utilize his academic and business expertise in managing our dynamic campus.”
Dr. Maxwell was recruited to MacMurray from the University of Northern Iowa, where he served as head of the Department of Industrial Technology. He entered the academy in 1999, serving as the chair and professor of the Business Department of the State University of New York Buffalo campus. Since then, he served as a professor of the College of Technology at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, ID; chair and professor of the Visual Communications and Technology Education Department at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH; and dean and professor of the College of Business, Technology and Communication at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN, before his appointment at University of Northern Iowa.
Dr. Maxwell received his bachelor’s in management/marketing from Maryville University in St. Louis, MO, and an MBA from Maryville. He holds a Ph.D. in management from Webster University in St. Louis, as well as a Ph.D. in technology management from Indiana State University.
Prior to his academic appointments, Dr. Maxwell had a successful career in the private sector. He was vice president of sales and marketing for Toshiba, Inc. in St. Charles, MO, and previously served as regional vice president with Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis.
As provost, Dr. Maxwell will oversee most on-campus departments, including Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, Enrollment, Athletics, and Student Life.
