MacMurray to celebrate D-III sports
April 9, 2014
The MacMurray College Athletic Department coaches, staff members and student-athletes will join with over 440 Division III institutions and 170,000 student-athletes next week, April 6-13, to promote NCAA “Division III Week.”
Division III Week is a NCAA identity initiative created three years ago to celebrate and promote the core values of Division III; as well as the contributions and accomplishments of D-3 student-athletes. Member schools are encouraged to conduct and promote at least one academic, athletic, co-curricular or extracurricular event during the week. The campaign’s ultimate goal is building a greater awareness and understanding of Division III intercollegiate athletics through local and national program activation and promotion.
The MacMurray College Athletic Department will conduct the following three events/projects in support of NCAA Division III Week:
- Rob Miller, a consult/speaker with ProActive Coaching and an intercollegiate conference commissioner, will conduct a one-hour session with the Highlander coaching staff on developing trust and sportsmanship with our teams. He will be speaking Wednesday, April 9 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Bailey Auditorium in Julian Hall. Miller will also conduct a one-hour session with all MacMurray College student-athletes from 8:00-9:00 p.m. in Bailey Auditorium with the theme, “Life Lessons for Student-Athletes.” The athletic department is funding this presentation through a SLIAC conference grant made possible by the NCAA.
- Throughout NCAA Division III Week, the MacMurray College Highlander Athletic Department will conduct a social media promotional campaign entitled “Forty for 40” that celebrates the academic, athletic and service highlights of each of the 10 MacMurray varsity sports, while also celebrating the 40th Anniversary of NCAA Division III athletics and D-3 Week. These 40 highlights will be posted (one per hour) on the MacMurray College Facebook and Twitter sites throughout the week and a complete listing will be distributed/promoted at the conclusion of NCAA Division III week.
- Coaches and Highlander student-athletes will join other campus members and community volunteers on Saturday, April 12, to participate in a Jacksonville Town Brook Clean-Up Day. The athletic department has set a goal of recruiting 40 volunteers (in keeping with the “Forty for 40” theme) to participate in this community clean-up campaign.
The MacMurray College athletic department will promote these activities throughout next week’s NCAA Division III Week via social media (using the #d3week hashtag on Twitter). The general public is invited to attend and participate in these free activities.
