MacMurray announces Sports Hall of Famers

    Jacksonville – MacMurray College announced its new roster of inductees to its Athletic Hall of Fame for 2005 – 2006. There will be five alumni honored this year including Olindo Mare ’95 of the Miami Dolphins.

     The official induction will occur during the Athletic Hall of Fame Brunch on Sunday, Oct. 30, as part of the College’s homecoming festivities this year.

     They include: Olindo Mare (’95), Jennifer Venhuizen Brewer (’96), Marlo Hollingshead (’94), Frederick Lewis (’67), and Matthew Niehaus (’95).

     Olindo Mare is a 1995 graduate of MacMurray College and a standout letterwinner in football. He holds single-season records in punts with 50 and in punt average at 36.68. In 1996, Mare made the New York Giants practice team. In 1997 he joined the Miami Dolphins where he continues to be a kicker.

     Jennifer (Venhuizen) Brewer is a 1996 graduate of MacMurray College and a standout letterwinner in volleyball and softball. She was a softball co-captain in 1995 and was voted the volleyball’s team MVP in 1993. Brewer still holds volleyball single season records from 1995 in block assists (43) and service aces with 53. In softball, she holds career records for her efforts from 1993-1996 with total runs (74), games pitched (40), innings pitched (184.2) and strikeouts (62). She also holds single-season records in at-bats (120), batting average (.417), doubles (9), runs (38), hits (50), RBI’s (31), total bases (61), shutouts (1), strikeouts (34) and strikeouts/7 innings (2.56).

     Marlo Hollingshed is a 1994 graduate of MacMurray College and a standout football letterwinner. He currently ranks 1st in single-season interceptions with 8 during the 1991 season. Voted to the Illini-Badger Football Conference 1st Team in 1991, he was named the conference outstanding linebacker in 1991 and 1992. In addition, Hollingshed was awarded the Victor Sheppard Award for the most outstanding athlete at MacMurray in 1991 and 1992.

     Fred Lewis is a 1967 graduate of MacMurray College and a standout letterwinner in men’s basketball. He was named to the NAIA District 20 2nd Team during the 1965-66 season. His career stats include 619 total points, 209 rebounds and 82% free throw percentage in 72 games played. During the 1965-66 season, Lewis set a school record for free throw percentage at 88%, making 65 of 74 attempts.

     Matthew Niehaus is a 1995 graduate of MacMurray College and a standout letterwinner in men’s basketball. He was a team co-captain during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons and was voted team MVP during 1994-95 season. Niehaus holds career records in games played (106), points (1,438), rebounds (583) blocked shots (46) as well as a single-season record in blocked shots (20). During the 1992-93 season he was voted to the All-Conference Honorable-Mention team and to the 1st Team All-Conference during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons.
