FLOOD RELIEF UPDATE
The necessary repair and renovation in the residence halls and classrooms after the June flooding of south campus were completed for the start of school. The Facilities Building has been repaired sufficiently for the crew to move back into it, and the tile floor in the bottom floor of the Jenkins Education Complex has been replaced . Now the main focus is on replacing the gym floor in preparation for the 2011-12 basketball season.
The bleachers and old flooring have been entirely removed, and the new floor has begun to arrive at the College. By the beginning of this week, three flat-bed semitrucks of flooring were unloaded on campus in preparation for laying the new basketball court and gym floor at the Wall Gymnasium in the Education Complex.
Last week and this week, workers were leveling the concrete base floor and began laying the new subfloor. They will begin on the west side of the gym, so that area is in place for the arrival of the new bleachers, expected in mid-October.
On the evening of June 17 and into the morning of June 18, a series of thunderstorms ripped through Jacksonville, knocking out the water service in town for three weeks and causing heavy flooding and widespread damage to the south end of our beloved campus. All south campus dormitories were flooded.
Student rooms in the basement of Norris House had water reaching seven feet high. Our newly renovated Facilities offices were severely flooded, and College vehicles parked nearby were lost due to flooding. The Jenkins Education Complex suffered the most devastating damage. There is also damage to some athletic fields and to Julian Hall.
In the first two weeks following the flooding, a professional restoration crew of more than 30 worked to remove water, sanitize buildings, and salvage resources. This work was extensive but unfortunately only the beginning. In addition to replacing the Wall Gymnasium floor, workout equipment, team uniforms and athletic training supplies were damaged and have to be replaced.
