COURSE OBJECTIVE:

            To gain an understanding of how private security functions, think critically about the role of private security, explore career opportunities in security and to learn how to conduct a security survey.

GRADING POLICY:

            quizzes - 20%

Multiple choice and true and false quizzes will be given at the beginning of class over each chapter of the textbook on the day the chapter is assigned to be read. No make-up quizzes will be given. You may drop your lowest score.

            midterm - 15% Multiple choice and true and false exam, over class notes.

            security survey - 40% See next page.

            class participation - 5%

           final - 20% Multiple choice, true and false and essay exam, over the entire semester.

These are the highest cut-off points that I will use in assigning letter grades:

                        A 90-100%

                        B 80-89%

                        C 70-79%

                        D 60-69%

                        F  0-59%

You are responsible for all the material in the reading assignments, even if we don't go over it in class. Additional material will be presented only in class. It will be necessary to read the assignments and attend class and take notes in order to do well in this course.If you must miss class be sure and borrow a classmate's notes.

SECURITY SURVEY

Security Survey Defined: An objective, critical, on-site examination and analysis of a business, industrial plant, public or private institution or dwelling to determine its existing security, to identify deficiencies, to determine the protection needed and to recommend improvements to enhance overall security. ( Hess 761)

-The class will be divided into small groups to conduct a security survey.

-You’ll begin working on the survey about half way through the semester.

-Preliminary work will be handed in in four separate stages.

-The final survey will be submitted in the form of a 1500 word paper and the presentation of the findings of the survey to the class.

-Grades will be assigned on an individual basis, determined by the quality and quantity of the work done by the individual.
