The MacMurray College women’s basketball team opened up the 2012-13 season 0-2 after dropping contests to Rust College and Earlham College.
The Highlanders competed in a tournament hosted by Webster University on Friday, November 16th when they fell to Rust College in their season opener, 63-56. MacMurray led at the half 30-28 but 23 turnovers in the second half left the Highlanders lagging behind. The Highlanders shot just 34.8 % from the floor in the second half and were not able to make a late comeback.
Senior Whittney Wade led the Highlander offense with 12 points while junior Sierra Sherrod followed with 10 points. Senior Rachel Yeast had three steals in the contest.
MacMurray returned to action in an afternoon contest against Earlham College on Saturday, November 17th. Mac was able to take a 27-19 lead over Earlham at the half, taking advantage of Earlham’s 12 turnovers.
The Highlanders were 8 for 22 on the floor in the second half and just 5 for 10 in free throws. Some late turnovers in the contest allowed Earlham to regain and maintain the lead. MacMurray rallied late to send the game into overtime, but were not able to gain the lead and lost 57-52. Sierra Sherrod and seniors Kianna Hogan and Kelsey Anderson all tallied 10 points apiece for the Highlander offense. Senior Amy Radford helped out defensively with 12 rebounds and three blocks.
MacMurray opens up at home on Monday, November 19th for at 7:00pm contest against Illinois College.
