MacMurray has released its 2011-12 men’s basketball schedule and the non-conference portion of the slate is highlighted by games against two NCAA Division 1 teams in the Tulane Classic in New Orleans, LA on December 9 and 10. The Highlanders will take on Southern University out of Baton Rougue, LA on December 9 and then the host school from Conference USA Tulane University on December 10. There are also road games against former two-time national champion Washington University in St. Louis and Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. The Vikings 27-4 last year advanced to the Elite Eight in last year’s NCAA Division III Tournament.
Coach Todd Creal’s season will open on the road in an exhibition game with NCAA Division I OVC member Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville on November 10 and the regular season begins at Washington University on November 15. An appearance in the Illinois College Bill Merris Tournament November 18 and 19 will surely grab some attention around Jacksonville as MacMurray and Illinois College have not met in a varsity contest since 2004. The pairings for the tournament, which includes Illinois Wesleyan University and Manchester College in Indiana, have not yet been made public so the possibility of a matchup between the cross-town colleges remains. The Highlanders then open the home portion of their schedule on November 21 playing their first game in the newly renovated Bill Wall Gymnasium.
The Highlanders, who finished 13-13 overall and 11-5 in SLIAC play and advanced to a second straight SLIAC Conference tournament last season, will then play two early SLIAC contests traveling to Louisville, KY to play defending regular season champion Spalding University on November 28th and then at home on December 3 against Greenville College before the trip to New Orleans. MacMurray will also play host to Dominican University on December 17 after finals and then a December 30 trip to Augustana. The final nonconference match-up will be a trip to new NCAA Division II member McKendree University on February 4 during the Highlanders by week from SLIAC play.
“It is a tremendous opportunity to play against two NCAA Division I teams in a large venue and see how well we can compete. It will definitely be a once in a lifetime experience for our kids,” said MacMurray College head coach Todd Creal. This will mark the 7th and 8th time in Creal’s tenure that MacMurray College has played NCAA Division I teams. “This year’s schedule is the toughest schedule we have faced in my tenure and wins in the nonconference will definitely be earned but I guarantee that these games will help us learn to compete at a level that will make us tough to beat come the bulk of our SLIAC schedule. Our kids look forward to the challenges that lay ahead.”
