The MacMurray College softball team closed out their SLIAC conference schedule with a doubleheader split with Webster University Wednesday afternoon at Palmer Field. Webster won the opening game 9-3 and the Highlanders rallied in the final inning to take the nightcap, 6-5.
Breezy Walton and Daerial DeGroot both homered in the opening game. Brittany Latham and Roni Grgin joined Walton with two hits apiece in the loss. The Gorloks broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning.
The Highlanders scored two runs with two outs in the seventh inning to earn a 6-5 win in the second game. Kendyl Cummins was the winning pitcher for MacMurray. She allowed five runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out nine batters.
DeGroot paced the Highlander offense with a home run, a double and four RBI. Tiffany Hazelwonder and Mackenzie Hocker both went 2-3; and Walton went 1-3 and doubled in the game-winning run after Hazelwonder's double scored Hocker with the tying run in the seventh inning.
Coach Lexy Determan's club closed out the conference season with a 6-12 record in SLIAC play; which earned them a 7th-place finish in the league standings.
The Highlanders (10-22 overall) will play a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow at Illinois College to close out the 2014 season.
