Freshman pitcher Michala Swanger's two-run home run in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Highlanders a 4-2 victory in game one of a doubleheader split Sunday at Knox College.
Swanger was also the winning pitcher in the opener that saw the Highlanders snap a four-game losing streak. She scattered six hits and struck out three and did not allow a walk in the game.
The top four batters in the line-up batted .500 for the game and scored all four Highlander runs. Swanger went 2-4 with three runs batted in, Roni Grgin went 2-4 and batted in the other MacMurray run. Mika Morgan and Daerial DeGroot also went 2-4 and each scored a run in the win.
The Highlanders scored the first run of game #2 on a Roni Grgin double but Knox took the nightcap by a score of 7-2. Mika Morgan went 2-4 in the game and scored a run. Kendyl Cummins took the loss on the mound for the Highlanders.
MacMurray College is now 3-8 overall (0-2 in league play); while Knox is 2-18 after the split.
Coach Lexy Determan's club travels to Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday for a non-league doubleheader.
