Mac Football Drops Close Contest
September 8, 2012
The MacMurray College Highlander football team entered week two on a mission to rebound after a loss in opening game week. On Saturday, September 8th, the team fell just short of their first victory of the season when they were defeated by Crown College, 35-28.
The Highlanders were on the board first when senior Deshonta Smallwood caught a 26 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Cody Hussey in the end zone, topping the Storm 7-0 early in the first quarter.
The momentum shifted to the visiting Crown College Storm in the second quarter. Crown scored three unanswered touchdowns, snatching the lead over the Highlanders at the close of the half, 21-7.
Crown opened the third quarter scoring their fourth straight touchdown, taking a commanding 28-7 lead. Mac finally broke the Storm’s scoring spree when sophomore DeJohn Randle caught a 13 yard pass from Cody Hussey. Crown quickly answered with a score of their own; ending the third quarter ahead 35-14.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Highlanders. The team was finally able to shut down the Storm offense while tallying two touchdowns late with an opportunity to tie the game up in their last play. Despite falling just short of the win, the Highlanders played a solid fourth quarter defensively and offensively.
The Highlanders totaled 485 total offensive yards in the contest including 360 passing yards by Cody Hussey. Freshman running back Patrick Hall led the team in rushing with 75 yards while Deshonta Smallwood tallied 168 receiving yards, and DeJohn Randle lead the team with 10 catches for 96 yards. On the defensive side, sophomore Howard Glover led the Mac defense with 8.5 tackles. Tim Calvin, senior Leo Coronado, and junior Taylor Hosta each contributed with six tackles apiece.
The Highlanders look for their first win of the season this Saturday, September 15th when they host Minnesota Morris for a 1:00pm kickoff.
