Kyle B. Sweeney
Head Football Coach
Kyle Sweeney enters the 2007 – 2008 season in his first year as the Head Coach of the MacMurray College Highlander Football Program. Prior to joining the MacMurray coaching staff, he gained his coaching experience at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, and Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.
While Coach Sweeney was the Defensive Coordinator at Endicott, the football team finished the 2006 season 5-2 in the New England Football Conference (NEFC) including a number one rank for the NEFC in scoring defense. In 2005 and 2006 his defense also ranked in the top ten nationally in several categories.
Preceding Endicott, Coach Sweeney was the Defensive Back Coach at Illinois Wesleyan University, (IWU) for two years. During those two years, IWU won back-to-back conference titles for the first time in almost 35 years and ranked in the top twenty nationally in Division III by the American Football Coaches Association each season. While at IWU, two of Coach Sweeney’s defensive back players, Brad Andrekus and Kevin Kaplan, earned All-American recognition and both were selected to play in the Aztec Bowl; the annual Division III All-Star game.
As an undergraduate, Coach Sweeney was a four-year starter at strong safety for Occidental College. During his senior year Coach Sweeney enjoyed an opportunity unique in college football; playing both sides of the ball. He played wide receiver while continuing to start at safety.
Coach Sweeney earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics for Business Management from Occidental College and his Master’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation Management from Illinois State University (ISU) in Normal, Illinois.
