Fred Curtis
Head Baseball Coach
Fred Curtis enters the 2007 - 2008 season in his first year as Head Coach of the MacMurray College Highlander Baseball Program. Coach Curtis is a member of the IHSA, and a certified basketball and football official. He is also a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Coach Curtis is the former general manager of the Jacksonville Jazz American Legion baseball team, 1981 - 2000. The Jazz made a state tournament appearance in 1985, and won 14 district championships under his leadership.
Coach Curtis brings over thirty years of teaching and coaching experience to the playing field. He was a Health and Wellness Instructor at Jacksonville High School (JHS) for thirty-five years, from 1970 - 2005. Initially, he held two coaching positions as the Crimsons' Assistant Football and Baseball Coach. In 1974, Coach Curtis became Head Baseball Coach for JHS and he retained that position for the next twenty-one seasons.
Prior to Coach Curtis' distinctive career at JHS he was the Physical Education Instructor and Athletics Director for Routt Catholic High School from 1966 - 1970. In this administrative position, Coach Curtis was the Rocket's Head Coach for Baseball, Basketball and Football. He started his teaching career at Quincy Notre Dame High School, 1965 - 1966, as the Head Baseball Coach, and Assistant-Coached Basketball and Football.
Coach Curtis is a graduate of Routt Catholic High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He earned his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education from Quincy University in 1965, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding baseball and basketball athlete. He earned his Master's of Science Degree in Physical Education from Indiana State University in Terra Haute, Indiana in 1971.
Coach Curtis has also made a reputation for himself locally as a community volunteer, coaching the YMCA Youth Basketball League, the Elks Youth Little League and the Jacksonville Pony - Colt League.
