Secondary Education Program Overview
The Secondary Education Program at MacMurray College provides
the student with a strong liberal arts background, a subject
matter major of thirty-three hours, and the necessary professional
education courses to become certified in Illinois.
MacMurray has secondary level teacher preparation programs in the following areas:
Biological Science, English, History, and Spanish
(K-12).
Students may receive middle school teaching endorsement by taking two additional
courses: Adolescent Psychology and Methods of Middle School Teaching.
Programs of Study
The students preparing to teach at the secondary or middle school level will
complete a thirty-three hour major in their chosen subject area, and the general
education courses as prescribed by the department and college, as well as the
following classes:
- Technology in Teaching
- Assessment and Evaluation
- Teaching in a Diverse Society – Education
of the Exceptional Learner
- General Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Field Experiences in Secondary Schools
- Secondary School Teaching Methods in Academic
Area
- History and Philosophy of Education
- Principles and Methods of Secondary Education
- Student Teaching
- Adolescence (Middle School Endorsement)
- Methods of Middle School Teaching – (Middle
School Endorsement)
Field Experience
The student seeking secondary certification will spend at least 45 hours in
a secondary school setting during their sophomore year.
Clinical Experience
The student candidate completes fifteen weeks of clinical experience during
the fall or spring semester of their senior year. The candidate will work with
the program director to find a suitable site for their clinical experience.
Accreditation
The secondary teacher preparation programs
are fully accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education. Illinois
has reciprocity teacher certification with thirty-five other states
and the District of Columbia.
