Mission
The mission of the Department of History
and Political Science is:
- To provide history, history secondary education, and political
science majors with a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines
of history and political science with special emphasis on United
States and World History, and United States and International
Politics.
- To prepare history and political science majors for the career
of their choice as well as for graduate and professional school.
- To prepare history secondary education majors for teaching
careers.
- To provide history and political science majors a structured
yet flexible program that allows them to meet their occupational
and educational goals.
- To provide all students who take history and political science
courses a firm understanding of how history and politics affects
their lives.
Political Science Program Overview
The political science program is located in
the Department of History and Political Science. Its particular
strengths are American politics, political communication, and
international politics.
Program of Study
The political science major requires 30 credit hours of courses
in political science that includes 6 hours of required courses.
The minor requires 18 credit hours that also include six hours
of required courses.

Internships
The faculty encourage students to take advantage
of internship opportunities. Our students have done internships
in a number of different settings including:
- Election Campaigns
- The Offices of U.S. Representatives
- The Office of the Illinois Governor
- The US Civil Rights Commission
- The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars

Dr. David E. Fitz
Associate Professor
Dr. Fitz holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science
from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed a B.A. in International
Studies at York College of Pennsylvania. His general areas of interest
are American political institutions and international politics.

Dr. Claire Jerry
Professor of Humanities and Communication
Dr. Jerry came to the College in 1992. She holds a B.A. degree
from Butler University, an M.A. from Miami Unversity, and a Ph.D. from the University
of Kansas. A very popular teacher, she has won two awards for excellence in teaching
since coming to MacMurray. She teaches courses in political communication and
American women's history. She particularly enjoys helping students present their
work at professional conferences. She also directs
the college's public speaking program and teaches the senior course in the Issues
of Community and Conflict sequence.
