Liberal Studies Overview

The Liberal Studies interdisciplinary major offers the opportunity to combine two fields of study, not just as separate majors or minors but as a connected whole. The connection is made by choosing courses in consultation with faculty advisors from both fields.

In addition to the college’s general education requirements, the major requires 39 credit hours of courses, 24 in one field and 15 in another. No more than one course in each field may be lower division (100 or 200 level); the rest must be upper division (300 or 400 level). Many upper division courses have prerequisites, so the major should be declared and courses chosen no later than the first semester of the junior year.

The two fields can be any two disciplines that offer sufficient numbers of upper division courses.

To enroll in the Liberal Studies major, a student must prepare a proposal listing the specific courses the student will take. The faculty advisors must approve the proposal, which is then filed with the Registrar. Any changes in the program must also be approved by the advisors and filed with the Registrar.
