Mission
The mission of the Department of History is:
- To provide history and history secondary education majors
with a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines of history
with special emphasis on United States and World History.
- To prepare history majors for the career of their choice
as well as for graduate and professional school.
- To prepare history secondary education majors for teaching
careers.
- To provide history majors a structured yet flexible program
that allows them to meet their occupational and educational
goals.
- To provide all students who take history courses a firm understanding
of how history affects their lives.
History Program Overview
The history and history secondary education
major are located in the Department of History and Political
Science. The program strengths are U.S. and World history and
preparing students for careers in secondary education. The history
secondary education program is certified by the Illinois State
Board of Education.
Program of Study
The history major requires the completion of 33 credit hours
in history that includes 12 hours of required courses. The history
minor requires the completion of 21 credit hours in history that
also includes 12 hours of required courses.
The history secondary education major requires the completion
of 36 credit hours in history that includes 15 hours of required
courses. It also requires the completion of at least 32 credit
hours of education and education related courses. Please click

Internships
The faculty encourage
students to take advantage of internship opportunities. Our students
have done internships in a number of different settings including:

- The Cultural Heritage Society of Jacksonville

- The Illinois Historical Preservation Agency

Dr. Claire Jerry
Professor of Humanities and Communication Chair of the History Department
Dr. Jerry came to the College in 1992. She holds a B.A. degree
from Butler University, an M.A. from Miami Unversity, and a Ph.D. from the University
of Kansas. A very popular teacher, she has won two awards for excellence in teaching
since coming to MacMurray. She teaches courses in political communication and
American women's history. She particularly enjoys helping students present their
work at professional conferences. She also directs the college's public speaking
program and teaches the senior course in the Issues of Community and Conflict
sequence.
