Faculty Biographical Sketches    

Our faculty brings a broad range of educational and professional experience to the classroom.

Nadine Szczepanski, Ph.D.
Chair and Professor of Chemistry

Dr. Szczepanski worked as an analytical chemist for the Illinois EPA after receiving her B.S. degree in Chemistry and Psychology from MacMurray. She then earned her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduate school, she worked as a product development chemist for Owens-Corning Fiberglass, Avery and Mead Paper Company. While at Mead, she earned a U. S. Patent.
Special areas of interest include developing labs that use real world chemistry as much as possible. She was a mentor for the U. S. team of the Chemistry Olympiad program from 1999-2001 and 2004-5. She traveled with the team to the International Chemistry Olympiad competition in Copenhagen, Denmark in July of 2000, Mumbai, India in July of 2001, Kiel, Germany in July of 2004 and will travel to Taipei, Taiwan in July of 2005.
She spent the 2001-2 academic year as a distinguished Visiting Professor at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Karl Luth, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Chemistry

Dr. Luth earned his doctorate at The Ohio State University in Inorganic Chemistry. He has worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Computational Physical Chemistry at Southern Illinois University. He is interested in computational inorganic chemistry and incorporating computers in chemistry labs.
He has spent parts of the last three summers as a reader for the Advanced Placement Chemistry Examinations given by the Educational Testing Service.
