Philosophy 236: Scandinavian Philosophy
This course will trace and illuminate major themes in the thought of Knut Hamsun and Søren Kierkegaard with a
particular eye toward the development of their existential thought. We will examine, for example, their critique
of morality, rationality, equal rights, religion, and aesthetics. On the tour, we will attempt to get a historical
sense of the development of Hamsun’s life and thought in Norway and Kierkegaard’s life and thought in Denmark,
especially where that development involves a working out of, or improvement on, their major themes, as both
thinkers were deeply influenced by their surroundings.
