Particular emphasis will be made on the early development of Christianity, Celtic spirituality, and religious conflicts in the context of Irish history. Sites include Limerick, Killarney, Cashel, Kilkenny, Dublin, Belfast, Omagh, Londonderry, Donegal, Sligo, Galway, and the Aran islands.

No prerequisite. Satisfies the Humanities breadth requirement.

Tour is limited to 45 participants.

2009 May Term (May 11-June 1): Study Tour to the Galapagos
This twelve-day tour (May 19–30) will focus on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. It will begin with an examination of the philosophical state of biological thought just before Darwin and then will concentrate on his time in the Galapagos Islands as the Naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle. A primary objective of the course will be to arrive at a careful philosophical understanding of Darwin’s book, On the Origin of Species. The intellectual revolution which took place during the next several years will be considered in terms of Darwin’s day-to-day work as a field naturalist and geologist faced with the task of assembling a massive amount of new material acquired in the Galapagos. The centerpiece of the course will be a professionally led and academically oriented eleven-day tour of the Galapagos Islands with extensive time spent at the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Leaders: Dr. Eric Berg, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at MacMurray, and Dr. Mark Largent, Assistant Professor of History at Michigan State University. For information contact Dr. Berg at eric.berg@mac.edu.

Cost will be approximately $4,500 inclusive. Deposit due April 1, 2008.
